Kech: Prominent religious scholar and Jamiat Ulema-e-Islam (JUI) leader Mufti Shah Mir Aziz was shot dead by unidentified armed assailants in the Kech district of Balochistan.
The attack took place on Friday evening in Turbat, the district headquarters, when Mufti Shah Mir Aziz was offering the Isha prayer. According to Kech Police Chief Rashidur Rehman Zehri, unknown gunmen specifically targeted Mufti Shah Mir inside the mosque.
Mufti Shah Mir died on the spot, while the mosque’s prayer leader sustained injuries. His body was shifted to Teaching Hospital Turbat for post-mortem, while the injured imam received medical treatment.
The police chief stated that investigations are ongoing from multiple angles, but no group has claimed responsibility for the attack so far.
This incident comes at a time when JUI had staged protests across Balochistan against the killing of its leader Wadera Ghulam Sarwar in Khuzdar last week and the suicide bombing in a mosque in Akora Khattak, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa.
Mufti Shah Mir Aziz’s assassination marks the second attack on JUI leaders in Balochistan within a week. Earlier, in Khuzdar’s Zehri area, unidentified gunmen killed JUI leader Wadera Ghulam Sarwar along with another religious scholar, Maulana Amanullah.
On Friday, JUI organized protests in Quetta and across Balochistan to condemn the killing of its leaders in Khuzdar and the suicide attack in Akora Khattak.
